Rocketboom not coming to Vancouver

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 11:43 pm

The Rocketboom folks sent me an nice email. The folks looking for actors in my previous Rocketboom post (which I have updated to state the truth!) are NOT associated with Rocketboom.

Lowepro - CompuTrekker AW backpack is what Kris and I carry all our photo, video and computer gear

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 10:46 am

My Lowepro Computrekker AW - Roland in Vancouver 1177.jpg

I know Tim has already bought a Brain Bag but if you have to carry around an SLR, a laptop, and other things (I also carry an iRiver, an iSight, 2 microphones, a zoom lens and many other technical doodads and geegaws), there is really no other alternative. It ain't stylish being all black but it does the job and it does the job well. Highly recommended.

From Lowepro - CompuTrekker AW.:

QUOTE

A perfect combination for photo gear and notebook computer, the CompuTrekker AW was designed specifically for digital photographers. Photojournalists and location photographers will find it a great travel companion. The backpack's reinforced construction, shock-absorbing closed-cell foam padding and tough, water-resistant outer fabric protects contents from moisture and sudden impacts. The patented All Weather Cover(tm) offers maximum protection from extreme weather conditions, dust and sand. A padded notebook compartment is secured with both zipper and quick-release buckle; while the main camera compartment is fully customizable with adjustable padded dividers. A quick-access hide-away Tripod Mount(tm), SlipLock(tm) attachment loops and a number of laminated and zippered organizer pockets provide photographers with fast, easy access to equipment.

Rocketboom-like site is looking for a Vancouver Amanda Congdon

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 11:00 pm

UPDATE: The rocketboom folks sent me an email. The folks looking for actors below are NOT associated with rocketboom. The more the merrier we say. Please make your ad more clear next time!

[Cross posted from rolandtanglao.com]

Go Rocketboom go! I nominate Debbie (check out my cheesy video with Debbie which shows her potential. I am sure it would be trivial to kick it up a notch and produce a killer demo reel) and Sarah (check out her awesome work at Geek Entertainment television) to co-anchor.

Intention Economy H*ll: Renting a Car - sh*tty software and no digital identity

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 10:17 pm

Amazing example of how we (the software industry) make sh*tty software (in this case car rental web apps) and how we have no digital identity. Dick (and the rest of the sxip folks), Boris, Phil, Doc and Identity Woman are on the case at the Internet Identity Workshop 2006 though so at least the digital identity problem will be solved (eventually).

Piratopian and High Street Hedonist - is that what I am?

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 7:34 am

I use my mobile phone (N70 thanks to the Nokia Blogger Relations program and my 7610 that I paid with my own money before that) to take short films so technically I qualify as a Piratopian and I take pictures of everything including what I am shopping for so I guess that makes me a High Street Hedonist. But since I don’t have access to a 3G network (even though the N70 is a 3G capable phone), I don’t strictly qualify!

From Smart Mobs: 3G mobiles ‘change social habits’.:

QUOTE

— Piratopians: Creative outsiders who use 3G phones to make short films and other broadcasts

— High Street hedonists: Use phones to show off new purchases, take pictures of items or asked for instant opinions from a dressing room

The report’s authors dubbed the new generation of mobile phone users Generation C, with C meaning content ".

BarCamp TDot and Mesh Conference in Toronto May 2006

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 2:26 am

I’d really like to go to BarCamp TDot and the Mesh Conference in Toronto since I could slip in a visit to my brother and his family as well as learn lots and meet some very smart people from the rest of Canada (since most of the people I know in Web 2.0 are on the West Coast of North America) who get things done in the Web 2.0 space.

BarCamp TDot is more my style (and the organizers think :-) I am coming because I sort of suggested it in my CanadaCamp post) so I am trying to see if I can find a way for me to go to BarCAmp TDot (and money permitting the Mesh Conference) that makes sense to my family and Bryght.

While I love "normal" conferences (and Gnomedex is definitely one of the best and hopefully I will be there this year again as well!), I personally get more out of unconferences like Northern Voice Moosecamp and BarCamp Amsterdam (to gratuitously name drop the unconferences I have helped organize).

Net net as they say, Mesh has lots of great people so I am sure it will turn out great regardless of what myself and Boris pontificate online about it :-) !

ajaxWrite is cheesy looking but it gets the job done

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 1:57 pm

ajaxWrite is u*ly but it is faster and appears to work as well as Writely. I must be tired but I can’t break it using the nested lists and the Roland and Troy test. Troy, I know you can break this!

Paypal Mobile Debuts and disrupts the mobile payment space

Filed under: The Digital Life — Administrator @ 11:16 am

I second that wow! Talk about "turning over the napkin" :-) of mobile payment. I’ll have to try this, but it sounds very cool and amazingly enough it sounds like it works in Canada from the get go!

From Paypal Mobile Debuts — Alec Saunders .LOG.:

QUOTE

Wow. I just picked up the news about PayPal mobile from Russell Beattie and MobileCrunch. Now you can use SMS to make any kind of payment to anyone who has a phone. You simply text 729725 with "SEND x to yyyyyyyyyy" where x is the amount, and yyyyyyyyyy is the recipients phone number. A couple of seconds later your mobile rings, you enter your pin number, and press 1 to authorize the transaction, and you’re done. Easy-peasy!
