Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS Lens - Review Roundup & Sample Photos

Filed under: Digital Cameras, The Digital Life — Administrator @ 6:15 am

The lens features a maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the zoom range which means it’s a faster alternative to other EF-S lenses. The Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS will provide 27.2 - 88 mm equivelant field of view on 35mm camera. The lens will be available in May 2006 with an expected street price of $1150.

>> REVIEWS (last updated: 31.10.06)

SLRgear reviewed the Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS Lens where they rated the lens 8.5/10 and wrote;
“Sharpness: This lens is decently sharp wide open, and wonderfully sharp at f/4, across its entire focal length range. It could be sharper at f/2.8 (some of the third-party options beat it), but it’s well-behaved, with none of the super-soft corners found in bargain models…The Bottom Line: this lens is really ideal for anyone doing available-light photography with a Canon sub-frame camera. It’s very sharp, has a nice wide f/2.8 maximum aperture, and offers Canon’s excellent Image Stabilization as well. If you do a lot of available-light work, this lens would justify its rather high price in a heartbeat. If you’re more interested in landscapes and tripod-based available light shooting, you can save a fair bit of money with any of several good alternatives.”

Patrick Micheletti reviewed the Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS Lens and wrote;
“Other quality of this zoom is the color rendering, well in Canon tradition, quite perfect in terms of natural, neutral, or saturation, clearly better (I mean different…) of Tamron or Sigma on this crucial point. On my EIZO screen, it is quite impossible to see a difference between the model and the picture on the screen, not reach the prime L lenses, but not so far. Perhaps the 24-70L give better saturation and contrast, but not sure… “

Photozone reviewed the Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS Lens and concluded;
“The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS is not a perfect lens but it lives quite well up to the very high expectations of the user base. The resolution figures are among the very best seen so far for an APS-C standard zoom lens. The center resolution is nothing short of outstanding and the even borders can keep a very good to even excellent quality level. The distortion characteristic is quite typical for a zoom lens in this range (pronounced barrel distortions @ 17mm, moderate pincushion distortions @ 55mm) whereas CAs are unusually moderate. Unfortunately vignetting is a weak spot of the lens peaking around 1EV at f/2.8 throughout the range. It’s not a show stopper but a little annoying nonetheless. The build quality of the lens is pretty good but in relation to the price tag of the lens Canon should have used a little less plastic - finally even the much cheaper EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L features a magnesium-alloy shell. Probably a marketing decision to keep professionals away from APS-C DSLRs. All-in-all the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS is clearly a level up from the other Canon standard zooms - a highly desirable lens though the pricing may rise a few question marks.”

TheDigitalPicture reviewed the Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS Lens and wrote;
“This lens is sharp! Wide open and from edge to edge. Unless the distance is close that is - I’m finding that close subjects do not produce the same image sharpness as normal distance subjects. The ISO 12233 chart test results indicate this as well. The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens shows slight sharpness improvement at f/4, but performance at f/2.8 is very good. Though I have not compared it directly to the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens, the 17-55 compares favorably with any other current Canon EF or EF-S zoom lens in this focal length range. “

>> REVIEWS (last updated: 16.03.07)

ImagingResource reviews the Nikon Coolpix L6 and writes;
“Where the Nikon Coolpix L6 disappointed me was in its image quality. Along with consistently blowing out highlights and producing color that lacked punch in all but the softest of lighting circumstances, the Coolpix L6 struggled in low light with its extremely inflexible and erratic ISO settings. I had a tough time capturing any decent shots in low light with the Nikon Coolpix L6 without turning on the flash. Also, many of my shots, particularly close-ups in the Macro mode, suffered from motion blur. So while there’s a lot that I liked about the Nikon Coolpix L6’s looks and operation, its image quality issues prevent me from making it a Dave’s Pick.”

TrustedReviews reviews the Nikon Coolpix L6 and writes;
“The movie mode is also good, shooting at 640 x 480 resolution and 30 frames a second, with mono audio. As is often the case the zoom lens cannot be used during video shooting, but it has 4x digital zoom for the video mode…The Nikon CoolPix L6 is a well-made, sensibly designed pocket compact that would be ideal for holiday snaps or general snapshot photography. Its exceptional battery duration means that it won’t let you down when you need it, and the excellent image quality means you won’t be disappointed by the results. If you can live with the slow performance and lack of low-light ability then it is excellent value for money.”

Steve’Digicams reviews the Nikon Coolpix L6 and writes;
“The L6’s ergonomics are good, Nikon’s “L” series models are very compact, and can be tucked away in almost any size pants pocket or handbag. The enlarged handgrip helps ensure a secure grip while shooting one-handed…The bottom line - Nikon’s Coolpix L6 is a mixed bag. While this model does offer great image quality and some very appealing features, it is disappointing with its overall sluggish shooting performance. At about US$199 or less, it does offer a good value, as long as you don’t plan on capturing fast moving subjects (like kids running through the house.) If you like the L6 but would like a bit more resolution and a broader zoom range, then be sure to check out our review of its 7-megapixel brother the Coolpix L5.”

PhotoReview has reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L6 and writes;
“Pictures from the test camera showed the typical elevated contrast and saturation of most digicams and outdoor shots had a slight warm cast. The higher contrast caused highlights to block up in shots taken in bright sunlight. Although it created an illusion of sharpness in most shots, Imatest showed overall resolution to be slightly below expectations and revealed detectable edge softening. Slight barrel distortion was found at the wider angles of view…The Coolpix L6 took 2.5 seconds to power up and shot-to-shot times without flash averaged 2.3 seconds. With flash, shot-to-shot times slowed to between eight and 10 seconds! We measured an average capture lag of 0.6 seconds but shutter lag was negligible with pre-focusing. The continuous shooting mode recorded shots at two frames/second. The battery were still going strong at the end of our tests.”

DigitalCameraReview have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L6 where they rate the camera 6.2/10 (good) and write;
“Images are generally very good to excellent with sharp resolution and lots of snap (although some very minor pattern noise is visible in shadow areas). ISO 50/100 images are consistently excellent with very good detail and virtually no noise. ISO 200 images are surprisingly good, essentially the same as lower ISO sensitivity images…Overall, I’m very impressed with the Nikon Coolpix L6 - the camera is clearly designed to appeal to a specific target audience and it does a very good job of meeting the needs of that demographic. The camera is very user friendly and it consistently delivers surprisingly good images. It’s an excellent choice for busy folks and casual photographers who want a camera that’s compact enough to drop in a pocket and take along everywhere they go, tough enough to stand up to the rigors of modern life, cheap enough to be a real bargain, and if all that’s not enough, the L6 has the best battery life of any digicam in its class. I wouldn’t buy an L6 for me - but I would seriously consider buying one for my wife (who is a lifetime member of the L6’s target audience).”

CNET have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L6 where they rate the camera 6.2/10 (good) and write;
“With adequate light, the Coolpix L6 can make some pleasing images. Most casual snapshooters will probably really like them. We did notice some fringing but also saw tons of fine detail and were pleased with the camera’s accurate exposures. The automatic white balance did an admirable job of serving up nearly neutral images with our lab’s tungsten lights…The bottom line: The Coolpix L6 doesn’t offer much control and is quite slow, but in good light, it can take nice photos. “
